
Witnesses say shortly before 5:30am on Tuesday, November 14th, a blast ripped through a residential property and littered the surrounding area with debris. At this time there has been no official confirmation of a cause.
WHITEHORSE, YT - One person is dead, and another is in hospital in critical condition following an early morning home explosion in Whitehorse's Riverdale subdivision. The Whitehorse RCMP confirmed they attended the scene of a home explosion on Bates Crescent, in the Riverdale subdivision of Whitehorse early this morning.
Witnesses say shortly before 530am on Tuesday, November 14th, a blast ripped through a residential property and littered the surrounding area with debris. Residents in the area say there was a brief power outage following the blast, and a number of adjacent homes were extensively impacted by the explosion. Witnesses reported seeing at least 1 person taken away by an ambulance.
ATCO Electric Yukon has since confirmed a localized power outage in the vicinity of Bates Crescent due to the blast, with no estimated time for reconnection of four affected homes. Additionally, Whitehorse City Hall has announced Bates Crescent will be limited to local traffic only for the time being, but has confirmed there is no further risk to the public at the scene.
Emergency crews remain at the scene, and the RCMP say their investigation into the blast is continuing. They've asked witnesses in the area to contact them at the Whitehorse RCMP Detachment.
