Yukon increases speeding, distracted driving fines

The territorial government is making changes to the Motor Vehicles Act, and the Summary Convictions Regulations to increase penalties for drivers.

The Yukon government is increasing fines for distracted driving and speeding offences.

YG says as of Tuesday, changes to the Motor Vehicles Act, and Summary Convictions Regulations will go to the maximum allowed under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The changes to the fines are as follows;

Violation Previous Penalty New Penalty
Distracted Driving $250 and 3 demerit points $500 and 3 demerit points
Less than 15km/hr over speed limit $25 and 2 demerit points $50 and 2 demerit points
15-30km/hr over speed limit $40 and 3 demerit points $100 and 3 demerit points
30-50km/hr over speed limit $75 and 4 demerit points $150 and 4 demerit points
More than 50km/hr over speed limit $150 and 6 demerit points $200 and 6 demerit points

Highways and Public Works says the goal is to reduce unsafe driving in the territory and about one-thousand speeding tickets are issued in Yukon per year, and the fatal crash rate is two times the national average.
