Police say a request about a man's wellbeing ended with a shooting inside a vehicle on the Alaska Highway Tuesday evening.

Yukon RCMP say a wellness check turned into tragedy in southern Yukon this week.

Police say members from the Carcross and Atlin detachments were checking on the wellbeing of a 48-year-old man after getting a request.

RCMP say about 7:30 Tuesday night, the man was located driving on the Alaska Highway south of Whitehorse and conducted a traffic stop.

Police say as officers were approaching the vehicle, the man fired a gun inside the vehicle and died on the scene.

RCMP say the Coroner is assisting, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is involved, as the case involves a shooting during a police investigation.

A release says the Department of Justice requested ASIRT investigate.

Police say as ASIRT is handling the case, no further information will be released until the independent investigation is complete.
